<title>Applications for Undergraduate degrees soar</title>
<description><![CDATA[Yet again, figures from UCAS show a massive increase in applications for the undergraduate degrees in the School of Computing Science - up over 33% from last year, compared to a national increase of 8%.
<p>
"We are delighted to see this continuing surge of interest in our degrees." noted Prof Pete Lee, the Head of School. "This shows the growing reputation and high teaching quality provided by the School, as reflected in the latest National Student Survey where our 94% score for overall satisfaction placed us in the top 7% nationally, the highest within Newcastle University."

<title>Research Highly Rated in RAE2008</title>
<description><![CDATA[The School of Computing Science has again scored highly in the results from the recent Research Assessment Exercise.
<p>
70% of the research outputs from the School of Computing Science were judged to be of 3* (internationally excellent) and 4* (world leading) quality in the recently announced results of RAE2008. This places the School 5th equal in the quality rankings of the 38 units of assessment within the University, helping the University to retain its firm position within the top 20 universities in terms of research power, and in the top 25% of departments in the subject area.
<p>
Professor Pete Lee, Head of School commented: 'We are delighted with this high rating quality analysis of the research within the School. These research results, coupled with the 94% overall satisfaction rating of the School's teaching from the 2008 National Students Survey, indicate the strength in depth within the School for both research and teaching activities.'
