Thomas Groß is a lecturer in Security, Privacy and Trust at the School of Computing Science of the Newcastle University (since 2011). Before that, he was a tenured research scientist (RSM) in the Security and Cryptography group of IBM Research - Zurich (since 2006) and IBM’s Research Relationship Manager for privacy research (since 2008). At IBM Research, he was responsible for research in identity governance, privacy and cloud security assurance. Thomas was leading projects for Identity 2.0, for establishing the first autonomous anonymous credential system on Java Card and for the automated verification of virtualized infrastructures. Thomas’ research interests are in security and privacy, applied cryptography and formal methods, as well as identity management.

Thomas received his M.Sc. (Dipl. Inf.) in Computer Science at the Saarland University, Germany, in 2004. He received his Ph.D. (Dr. Ing.) in Cryptography from Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany, in 2009. His thesis "Browser-based Identity Federation" was on the verification of standardized identity federation. He received a degree in Practical Competence in Transactional Analysis from the Erich-Berne Institute, Zurich, Switzerland, 2009. Thomas is a member of the ACM, IEEE, IACR and EATA, as well as Alumnus of the German National Academic Foundation.
