Course overview: MSc in Computing at Newcastle
The first 9 months of the programme are devoted to lectures totalling about 20 hours per week, which are examined by written papers. You will also undertake a substantial amount of supervised and unsupervised practical work.
The final 3 months are devoted to an individual project. An important part of the MSc is the preparation of a dissertation describing the project. You will also be required to give a demonstration of your project where you will be questioned on your dissertation.
Lectures
Lectures are organised into modules. Modules introduce you to the fundamentals of computing science and to equip you with the basic skills you will need later in your career. You will take the following compulsory modules:
- Programming and data structures
- Computer Environments
- Software Engineering (including a group project)
- Requirements Analysis, Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Database Design
- Advanced Programming
- Networks and Web Technologies
Project
The outline of your individual project is decided during the second term, enabling you to do some preliminary work during the third term. Full-time work on the project begins in the summer, immediately after written examinations in June.
